The Orthopaedic Group

For nearly three decades, physicians at The Orthopaedic Group have been recognized as one of the nation's outstanding resources for musculoskeletal care. Connecticut Magazine routinely honors the group's physicians as the state's "Top Docs" and the Consumer's Research Council's "Guide to America's Top Physicians" repeatedly selects members of the group for inclusion in its prestigious publication.

Dr. Christopher Lynch performed the first computer navigated total knee replacement in New Haven County and Dr. Shirvinda Wijesekera performed the first disc replacement surgery at the Hospital of St. Raphael. Richard Bernstein, M.D. lectures nationally on the treatment of hand and wrist fractures, including a novel plate technique for complex wrist fractures. He performs minimally invasive, endoscopic and arthroscopic surgery of the hand and wrist. Currently, Dr. Bernstein is developing a new system for treating elbow injuries and is writing a book for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand entitled, Masters Guide for Arthritis of the Hand and Wrist. Richard Zell, M.D. an expert in orthopaedic trauma and sports medicine, was awarded the Yale Orthopedic Resident's teaching award and Louis Iorio, M.D., a leading authority in the non-surgical management of general orthopaedic disorders, has published original research on Ankle Replacement Surgery and articles addressing reconstructive forefoot surgery. John Irving, M.D., pioneered, published and lectures on his leading two-incision minimally invasive hip replacement technique. Alan Reznik, M.D. has invented instruments for arthroscopic surgery. Along with minimally invasive ACL reconstruction, he performs an innovative suture welding technique for arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and is a clinical investigator for a synthetic grafting technique for bone defects in the knee.
